What is it?
The annual Egremont Crab Fair takes place on Saturday 20th September with a whole day of events including the Gurning World Championships. The fair originally began in 1267 and is one of the oldest fairs in the world. The fair gets its name from the giving away of crab apples, a tradition started by the Lord of Egremont.
There will be a whole host of family friendly entertainment throughout the day. The fair day begins at 12.30pm with the traditional Parade of the Apple Cart, where apples are thrown to the crowds along the street. In the afternoon a programme of sporting events take place in the sports field, with events such as ferret racing, Cumberland & Westmorland Wrestling, wheelbarrow races, a pig’s bladder football game and terrier racing. All the sporting events can be taken part in on the day, just turn up in plenty of time.
The Gurning World Championships take place in the evening at the Market Hall. The competition is free to enter, just turn up. There is a competition for men, ladies and juniors. A gurn is simply a distorted facial expression and those judged to be the best on the night will win. So pull your best (or worst) face and head to the Gurning World Championships!
