Totnes Orange Races 2014 - Contrary Life When: 19th August 2014

Where: Civic Square, Totnes, Devon

£: Free

What is it?

Every year the Totnes Elizabethan Society organise a series of unusual races through the streets of the small Devon market town.  The Totnes Orange Races take place on Tuesday 19th August 2014.

The Totnes Orange Races claim to originate from when Sir Francis Drake visited the town in the 1580s.  The renowned captain and explorer was said to have bumped into a delivery boy, spilling oranges which rolled away quickly down the street.  Every summer the town commemorates this event with a quirky race where oranges are thrown down the High Street and Fore Street, with competitors chasing after the surprisingly quick fruit.

The races are free to enter.  There are races for both adults and children, with prizes for the winners.  Be warned though, the oranges can roll pretty fast down the street!  Watch the video below to see how previous competitors have fared in the races.
