What is it?

This bank holiday weekend the industrial heritage site, Royal Gunpowder Mills, in Waltham Abbey have a pyrotechnical-tastic programme of family friendly activities planned.  The Big Bang Weekend, from Saturday 23rd to Monday 25th August, will be chock full of mad experiments, rocket launches and explosions.  The 175 acre park will be alive with super science, cool cannons and big bangs.

Catch up with mad-cap Professor Nitrate in the outdoor arena, who will be up to his old tricks mixing up chemicals, blowing things up and seeing how far he can fire projectiles and rockets.  Learn how to make your own safe mini explosions with Professor Nitrate and witness how the special effects professionals create explosions and other pyrotechnic effects for film and television.

Have a go at making and firing compressed air rockets, racing water pressure propelled rockets down a specially constructed dual track and watch black power rockets fired high into the sky by RGM’s very own rocket scientists.  Fire different types of air cannons and see if you can hit the target, then watch a display of hairspray cannons and larger gas cannons in action.

Children can discover their sharp shooting skills in the BB Airsoft and Nerf Ranges, with BB Airsoft guns for older children and adults, and Nerf guns for younger children.  Families can also see the fantastic collection of real weapons in the Armoury.

With more workshops and activities planned throughout the summer bank holiday, all the family can learn about the exciting explosive history and heritage of the Royal Gunpowder Mills and get hands-on with interactive activities. Regular land-train and military truck tours will also run, so all the family can explore the site and find out about the 300 years of the Royal Gunpowder Mills history.
