What is it?
On 1st August 2014 it is officially Yorkshire Day. So why not celebrate with an entire Yorkshire weekend in the beautiful market town of Helmsley? Helmsley is situated on the edge of the North York Moors National Park.
The Helmsley Summer Celebration promises to have something for everyone. There will be street theatre and music, including circus performers and comedy acts suitable for all ages. There will be plenty of food tastings going on, and for the grown-ups there will be beer, cider and wine tasting from local producers.
Throughout the weekend visitors to the Helmsley Summer Celebration can take the Yorkshire Icon Trail. Whilst walking around the independent shops, cafes, pubs and restaurants, visitors can spot their favourite ‘born and bred’ Yorkshire men and women hiding around the town for a chance to win a prize.
On Friday 1st August, Yorkshire Day, there will be entertainment from top family acts including Maynard Flip Flap and the Suitcase Circus, who’ll be in the market place from 10am.
On Saturday 2nd August, visitors can take part in the good old Yorkshire tradition of Welly Wanging at the International Centre for Birds of Prey. They can also rise to the occasion with the Yorkshire Baking Competition, or try their hand at the River Duck Race. The Dog ‘Bride and Groom’ Fancy Dress Competition will also take place on the Saturday from 11am in Barkers Yard.
Finally, there will be a Wedding Dress Festival at Helmsley’s All Saints Church for one week from 2nd August. The festival will show dresses and wedding memorabilia from across the decades.
