What is it?
Take an Intoxicating Walk Down Gin Lane with Discover Medical London on 18th July. This special tour of London pieces together the place of alcohol in the sickness and health care of the capital throughout history.
This special event is part of a season of events accompanying the exhibition ‘This Bewitching Poison’: Alcohol and the Royal College of Physicians. The study tour allows participants to take a literal and metaphorical stroll down ‘Gin Lane’ and uncover the story of London, alcohol and (ill) health.
Much like scenes in William Hogarth’s ‘Gin Lane’, discover grooms’ pubs, gin palaces, temperance halls, houses for fallen women and ‘harmless’ milk bars. Find out about alcoholic excess and its devastating effects across the centuries.
The tour begins in Lincoln’s Inn Fields and concludes at the Royal College of Physicians with (non-alcoholic) refreshments and a tour of ‘This bewitching poison’ exhibition. The event is expected to last 4 to 4 1/2 hours, with time for exhibition viewing.
