What is it?
Wales’ Woodfest aims to showcase wood crafts and skills, and takes place from 27th to 29th June. This family friendly event has 7 event arenas, over 150 trade and demonstration stands, and 6 marquees full of interesting and unique goods.
One of the popular Woodfest arenas will host an array of timber sports including axe racing, sawing and tree climbing events. Carve Cymru will bring together 18 of the finest chainsaw artists in the UK and is the main highlight of the festival. On Friday and Saturday there will be speed carving events to enjoy as well as the main sculptures, which will be created during the weekend.
Other competitive events include the Pole Climb. Woodfest is one of the few show grounds in the UK that hosts pole climbing competitions and displays. Towering over the festival field will be two huge 80ft Douglas Fir poles, specially selected from Longleat Forest and transported up to the festival site in North Wales. This thrilling event tests who can climb a free-standing wooden pole in the fastest time with the appropriate climbing aids. Using spiked boots, strops and safety harnesses, the top athletes can often scale the pole in around 10 seconds. Competitors will range from experts down to novice classes, and come from all over the UK and Europe.
In addition to the wood-themed events there will be a whole host of countryside displays and activities to enjoy. There will be birds of prey, a dog show and heavy horse demonstrations. There will also be a Ferret World where visitors can learn more about ferrets and children can have a go at ferret racing.
But it isn’t all about wood. Bikefest will also be taking place at the event. It will see some of the UK’s top MTB trials riders gathering together to test their skills on the custom-built trials course.
For those who would like some musical entertainment, there is Woodfest Rocks on the Saturday offering up an evening of live music. Woodfest Rocks tickets cost £10 and the gates for this event open at 6pm.
Camping is also available at the festival for those who wish to make a weekend of it.
