What is it?

The Wellesbourne & District Lions Club Raft Race has been going since 1976 and each year raises money for charitable causes.  The race takes place on the River Avon, starting at Wasperton, with the finish line opposite the new Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon.   Those taking part in the race must negotiate over seven miles of river and two weirs before they reach the finish though!

Lions Charity Raft Race 2014 - Stratford upon Avon The race has four different classes which teams can enter; Survivor, Formula 1, Mechanical and Novelty.  The novelty rafts are usually the most interesting to watch with competitors choosing popular themes from TV and film.  Past entries have included 101 Dalmatians, bank robbers, Finding Nemo and The Magic Roundabout.

This year the raft race is raising money for the Cardiomyopathy Association (CMA), which aims to fight heart muscle disease through support, education and campaigning.  The event is hoping to raise enough money to fund a part-time children’s nurse for a year.
