What is it?
This year’s Plymouth Pirate Weekend takes place in the Barbican and Sutton Harbour area of the city on Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th May, with plenty of family fun to be had.
Tall ship, The Bessie Ellen, will be berthed in Sutton Harbour and families will be invited on board to get a taste of life as a pirate from a pirate guide. Local musicians will play sea shanties at Elizabeth House and visitors can also decorate a giant cardboard pirate ship and pirate figures, and make pirate hats while they are there.
Over the weekend, children can test their skills making Georgian musket balls and candles or dying cloth. They can also learn about pirate history with ‘gory’ details of medicine on board the pirate ships and enjoy a weapons display from The Medieval Society. Entertainment during the weekend will also include Pirate Tales with Tyburn Jig, the Yo Ho Ho Pirate Puppet Show, stilt walkers, jugglers and face painting. Look out for Captain Jack Sparrow lookalike, Jonty Depp, causing mischief amongst the crowds.
There will be a best fancy dress competition for under 16s with a chance to win a year’s pass to the National Marine Aquarium. There will also be a Treasure Trail with hidden pirate clues to follow.
