What is it?
The Maldon Mud Race is an annual mad dash (or sticky wade) through the riverbed of the River Blackwater in Essex. This year’s event takes place on 25th May with the event and competitors raising money for charity.
The quirky Maldon Mud Race began in 1973 with a pub-related bet. It developed into a race to across the river for a pint of beer and then finally it became the fun charity event it is today. Just to make things even more unusual, competitors tend to come in fancy dress and really get into the mad spirit of things. Last year’s event attracted around 16,000 visitors and raised over £46,000 for good causes.
Four hundred metres of wading through mud may not be your idea of fun, but watching the event is certainly a good laugh. All competitors who complete the course will receive a medal. Prizes are awarded for various categories including Last Person to Complete the Course, Best Male Fancy Dress, Best Female Fancy Dress and The Most Senior Competitor to Complete the Race.
