What is it?

Get your weekend off to a spooky start with ghosts, ghouls and ghastly tales at Belsay Hall in Northumberland on Friday 16th May.

M.R. James is thought of as one of the best ghost story tellers of all time, redefining the genre by using realistic settings.  James’ stories were originally intended to be read aloud and at the Ghost Stories After Dark event the audience will hear one of James’ spooky stories.

As night falls, the ghost story A Warning to the Curious will be heard in the eerie and empty country house.  The story was first published in 1925 and tells the tale of Paxton, an antiquarian and archaeologist who digs up a crown and finds himself stalked by a supernatural guardian.  The tale is said to be one of James’ bleakest, so where better to hear it than inside the historic Belsay Hall after dark?

This event is part of the nationwide Museums at Night series.

Belsay Hall, Castle and Gardens are the creation of the Middleton family, over more than seven centuries. Belsay Hall is an austerely Classical Greek Revival villa, now displayed without furnishings to reveal the fine craftsmanship of its construction.
