When: 13th – 15th June 2014
Where: Chatham, Rochester and Gillingham, Kent
What is it?
Fuse Medway Festival, the free outdoor arts festival for the people of Medway and beyond, promises a very special line-up of events this year. In a celebration of all things creative the festival’s programme will fill the streets and public spaces of Chatham, Rochester and Gillingham with the very best in international and UK outdoor arts. Visitors should expect beautiful and breath-taking shows, music, dance and circus, an Art Market and a Saturday night ‘action movie in the sky’ aerial spectacular.
The line-up of events includes world-class breaking combined with Lindy Hop, Charleston, and swinging big band music of the roaring 20’s from Bad Taste Company. Les Enfants Terribles’ Imaginary Menagerie, sees an enormous exotic caravan complete with Vaudeville acts, live musicians and puppeteers. There will also be spectacular circus acts from Belgium, and a magical dance-theatre mini gig for the under-5s inspired by the absurd children’s poetry of Russian Daniil Kharms. A market stall with a difference where high-octane parkour, dance and circus skills encourage children to eat their fruit and parents to run off with the circus will also be present!
See the The Smallest Theatre in the World mounted on a motorbike sidecar or the tiny and eccentric Smallest Hotel in the World. Roll back the years to the 1970s and indulge in nostalgia as you play the Crimplene Millionaire boardgame.
Saturday night’s sensational piece of outdoor storytelling, As the World Tipped from Wired Aerial Theatre, will be sure to provide a night to remember. The performance will have dramatic film and visuals and breath-taking aerial performance high in the night sky.
Three exciting performances have been specially created by local artists for Fuse. In One Day Works, Nicole Mollett will bring together performers, film-makers, print makers and artists who will each celebrate Medway in their own unique and creative way. They will be using the wonderful silver converted 1950s Airstream caravan that is the Kent Cultural Baton, as a base. Knuckle and Joint Theatre Company will create a walkabout street theatre spectacle through Save the Lyma Birds!, using intricate and beautiful puppets. Squarecube Artisans’ Comic Cuts led by local artist Richard Jeferies will create stunning black and white comic book silhouettes, to bring an astonishing new dimension to public spaces around Medway.
The Fuse Medway Festival will have its very own marking of the anniversary of the First World War with a family friendly show telling the untold stories of the Medway area. Home Fires will be created specially for Fuse by the Central School of Speech and Drama.
The Fuse Medway Festival kicks off with a week of community activities called Lighting the Fuse, followed by an opening night and parade on 13th June in Gillingham High Street. There is a Street Arts Day on Saturday in Chatham High Street and the Big Picnic on Sunday takes place in Rochester. The event is supported by the Arts Council’s Grants for the Arts Scheme and Medway Council.
