What is it?
The London Ice Sculpting Festival is a free event which sees teams from around the globe take part in the action-packed competition in Wood Wharf. Teams of competitive sculptors from Africa, Belgium, France, Hungary, Ireland, Poland, Spain, Sweden, the UK and the USA will wield chainsaws and chisels to create glistening works of art in the Single Block, Freestyle and Big Block Competitions. This year’s sculpture themes will be Fabulous Fashion and River Life.
The London Ice Sculpting Festival brings a whole weekend of free entertainment in addition to the sculpting competitions. In Wood Wharf visitors can enjoy a winter food market and even try their hands at sculpting for themselves at one of the masterclasses run by professionals from The Ice Box. Visitors can also have a skate at Ice Rink Canary Wharf, situated beneath the soaring buildings in Canada Square Park. Sessions for ice skating should be booked in advance.
The festival begins on Friday 10th January from 12 noon in Wood Wharf with the Single Block Competition which sees both members of each team take on a crystal clear one metre block of ice, carving to the theme of River Life. This will be followed at 4pm by the Freestyle Competition. For this competition each individual sculptor uses a one metre ice block to create dazzling designs of their own choice.
On Saturday and Sunday the Big Block Competition takes place. For this competition the sculptors start with a two metre block of ice. Each team will carve out ideas from the theme Fabulous Fashion over the two days.
