What is it?
Look out for some interesting performances in Gloucester this weekend as Mummers descend on the town for the annual International Mummers Festival.
Mumming is a traditional folk drama with roots in medieval court entertainment. Mummers plays are performed by troupes of actors known as mummers, guisers, soulers and tipteerers. These folk plays can be performed in the street and more traditionally in public houses.
On Friday evening mummers will be touring the local pubs for ‘Mumming in the Dark’. On Saturday there will be more tours and a procession, so look out for costumed performers around the town throughout the day.
Below is a clip from the Penny Plain Theatre Company who will be at the festival this year.
