What is it?
Every Boxing Day since the 1960s, Grantchester has held an inter-village barrel race. This year’s event kicks off at 12 noon outside the front of the Rupert Brooke pub.
The barrel race began when locals from the village’s four pubs challenged each other to roll four empty wooden beer barrels up and down the road in a relay. The traditional races between Grantchester residents still take place, as well as battles between the neighbouring villages of Barton, Coton, Madingley, Newnham, Hauxton, Impington, Thriplow and Trumpington.
Below is a clip from last year’s race.
Granchester is about a 50 minute walk from the centre of Cambridge. The event will be raising money for charity so donations on the day will be most welcome.
