When: 19th October 2013
Where: Priory Meadow Shopping Centre, Hastings, East Sussex
What is it?
On 19th October the 61st National Town Criers Championship will be taking place in Hastings. Town criers will be travelling from all over the country to take part in this spectacular event.
Judging in the competition will be based on volume, diction, clarity and inflection. The MC for the event will be Hastings own town crier, Jon Bartholomew.
Historically town criers were the main way of communicating news to the masses as many people were illiterate. The town criers would attract the attention of the people by ringing a bell and shouting ‘oyez’, meaning hear ye. These days the town crier’s purpose is mainly ceremonial.
Town crying competitions take place across the UK all year round. The National Town Criers Championship in Hastings is one of the more established competitions and takes place annually.
