What is it?
This Island Earth lands at the Royal Observatory Greenwich as part of Alien Season.
This sci-fi bonanza depicts the abduction of Earth’s brightest minds by aliens to assist in an interplanetary war. The film is a classic space opera featuring interstellar battles, bug-eyed monsters and glaring scientific errors; but it is also a warning against the increasing use of atomic energy in the 1950s, and the misuse of resources.
Following the movie a short talk will explore the film’s portrayal of alien technology and how it reflects the views of society in the 1950s. The talk will also explore how attitudes have changed since then.
