What is it?
The World Hen Racing Championship is an annual event held at the Barley Mow Inn where they have been holding races for about 20 years. Competitors come from all over Europe to take part in this quirky event.
Hen racing itself has a long history in the area. The local Derbyshire villages used to compete against each other in the summertime for a bit of fun. Racing over a track of about 15 metres, the hens are given 3 minutes in each heat to cross the finish line.
The hen races are free to watch and anyone with a hen can take part. Don’t worry if you don’t have a chicken, you can hire one and join in the eggcitement!
The Barley Mow is a family run village pub serving real ale and food.
