Filthy fun in Essex with the Maldon Mud Race

By Caroline King - April 15, 2013Posted in : Alternative Sport

Essex events - Maldon Mud Race When: 5th May 2013 at 3pm

Where: Promenade Park, Maldon, Essex

£: Free to watch

What is it?

The Maldon Mud Race is a mad dash or wade through the riverbed of the River Blackwater.

This annual quirky event began in 1973 with, as most wacky customs seem to, a pub-related bet.  It developed into a race to across the river for a pint of beer and then finally it became the fun charity event it is today.  Just to make things even more quirky, competitors tend to come in fancy dress and really get into the mad spirit of things.  Last year’s event raised over £70,000 for good causes.

Four hundred metres of wading through mud may not be your idea of fun, but watching the event is certainly a good laugh.  This year’s event will be started by one of the 1966 World Cup heroes, Martin Peters MBE.  To get a flavour of the event, have a watch of the video below.

Entries for this year’s race are now closed but you can take part in next year’s event which will be held on Sunday 23rd March 2014.
