What is it?
This year the Blackawton International Festival of Wormcharming takes place on 5th May. Each year the festival has a theme and this year’s is beach party. So if you fancy taking part, you’d better wriggle your way into a Hawaiian shirt or bikini for the event. There are prizes for the best costumes so the more effort you put in the better! Hopefully the sun will be out to make the beach party theme a success. The Worm Charming winner will get their name inscribed on the special shield alongside the previous winners.
Sunflower seeds will be given out at the event for the Tallest Sunflower Competition so be sure to get yours to be in with a chance of being the future winner of this contest.
Blackawton has held an annual worm charming event since 1984 and it has gone from strength to strength every year. The day begins at 11am, gathering outside the Normandy Arms. Charmers must be registered by 12 noon (this takes place by the bus stop). There is then a parade through Blackawton village with stops for maypole dancing and the toasting of the worm. The procession ends at the secret venue for the worm charming.
After the worm charming event there will be a dog show. The local pub, The George Inn, will also be hosting a beer festival and live music.
