What is it?
A popular annual festival in Stonehaven, “The Fireballs” light up the street, attracting many spectators. Around 45 people parade along the high street swinging fireballs around their heads as they go.
Fireballs were originally swung by the men of the fishing community from the turn of the century. After a short decline the fireballs tradition has now become popular once more. There are several explanations to why people begun swinging fireballs, one theory is that they were pagan sun charms to ensure plenty of sunshine and another theory is that they were meant to destroy all harmful influences.
Spectators should make sure they wrap up warm for the event.
