When: 8th September 2012 from 10am
Where: Newent, Gloucestershire
£: Free (car park £3)
What is it?
Newent Onion Fayre is a one day street festival with an onion show, stalls, entertainment and an onion eating contest.
The roads in Newent will be closed for the day and instead of cars they will be filled with rides, stalls, live music and street entertainment. The food festival which takes place as part of the Onion Fayre will have stalls full of produce including jams, cakes, cheese, oils, fresh fruit and vegetables, bread, beer, wine, cider and liquors. This year there will also be food demonstrations. The onion show itself will take place in the Memorial Hall featuring onions, leeks, garlic and chives from exhibitors across the UK.
Perhaps the most interesting and eye-watering part of the day will be the world-famous Onion Eating Competition which begins at 1pm on the main stage. Competitors are said to come from far and wide to take part. There are two rounds starting with the ladies’ event where each entrant is given a 5 ounce peeled raw onion to consume in the fastest possible time. Next comes the men’s event which sees competitors chomp their way through an even bigger onion, a whopping 7 ouncer, like it’s an apple!
