What is it?

The annual Grasmere Sports and Show will be 160 years old this year and has been a regular event since 1868.  This popular Lake District event sees participants compete in a variety of sports, including Cumberland Wrestling, fell running and hound trails.

Cumberland Wrestling is a traditional sport that is still popular in this part of the country.  Wrestlers wear costumes consisting of long johns, an embroidered vest and velvet trunks.  Matches are decided by the best of three falls.  Watch our video below for a taste of this great tradition.

This year’s show will be opened by The Adamson Band, who will give a marching display.  There will also be birds of prey demonstrations with owls, falcons, hawks, eagles and vultures.
