What is it?
The World Hen Racing Championship is an annual event held at the Barley Mow Inn where they have been holding races for nearly 20 years, with competitors coming from all over Europe to take part. Hen racing itself has a long history in the area as villages used to compete against each other in the summertime. The Barley Mow is a family run village pub serving real ale and food.
Racing over a track of about 20 metres, the hens are given 4 minutes in each heat to cross the finish line. The hen races are free to watch and anyone with a hen can take part. But don’t worry if you don’t have a chicken, you can hire one and join in the eggcitement!
