What is it?
The Welly Wanging World Championships are held annually in the village of Upperthong in Yorkshire. Part of the Gala weekend, the event claims to be the only official Welly Wanging Championships, with Upperthong said to be the birthplace of the ‘sport’.
Welly Wanging is a bit like the javelin but with boots and is played with a little humour and lots of competitiveness. There are four categories (Men’s, Women’s, Boys and Girls) with a trophy for the World Champions and a five-pound note for the winners of the children’s category.
