Muddy madness in Essex

By Caroline King - April 24, 2012Posted in : Alternative Sport

When: 29th April 2012

Where: Promenade Park, Park Drive, Maldon, Essex CM9 5JQ

What is it?

Maldon Mud Race is a mad dash or wade through the riverbed of the River Blackwater.  It all began in 1973 with, as most wacky customs seem to, a pub-related bet.  It developed into a race to across the river for a pint of beer and then finally it became the fun charity event it is today.  Just to make things even more quirky, competitors tend to come in fancy dress and really get into the mad spirit of things.  400 metres of wading through mud may not be your idea of fun, but watching the event is certainly a good laugh.  Below is a video of last year’s event.
