What is it?
The Print Room’s Co-Artistic Director Lucy Bailey directs Mike Poulton’s new adaptation of Chekhov’s enduring masterpiece. Starring Iain Glen and Charlotte Emmerson, this will be Poulton’s fourth stage adaptation of the play revised for a contemporary audience.
First published in 1897, Uncle Vanya deals with frustrated hopes and wasted lives. The play finds an elderly Professor and his glamorous wife visiting a rural estate that supports their urban lifestyle. Vanya (brother of the Professor’s first wife) and Astrov (the local doctor) fall for the glamorous wife, Elena. Sonya (the Professor’s daughter) meanwhile suffers from the awareness of her own lack of beauty and her unrequited feelings for Astrov.
Olivier Award nominated actor Iain Glen is known for roles both on stage and screen, including Sir Richard Carlisle in Downton Abbey, as well as Game of Thrones (2011) and The Crucible (2007). Charlotte Emmerson has appeared in The Seagull (2003), The Postman Always Rings Twice (2005) at the Playhouse Theatre; Tom Stoppard’s Coast of Utopia Trilogy (2005) and The Cherry Orchard at the National Theatre, both directed by Trevor Nunn.
The Print Room was founded in 2008 by Artistic Directors Anda Winters and Lucy Bailey. Uncle Vanya sees The Print Room in a one-off from presenting new and rarely performed plays. Bailey currently directs The Taming of the Shrew for the RSC.
