What is it?
Dress as a pirate or your favourite character from Robert Louis Stevenson’s famous novel, Treasure Island and head for Blists Hill Victorian Town for their Treasure Island weekend. The open-air museum in Shropshire’s Ironbridge Gorge will be running a special literary themed event with actors recreating scenes from the popular maritime book of mutiny and buried treasure.
The Treasure Island Weekend is part of a programme of days out, exhibitions and festivals celebrating the 25th anniversary of Ironbridge Gorge being designated as one of the UK’s first World Heritage Sites in 1986.
The last remaining Severn Trow, a cargo boat which operated along the River Severn in the 1800s, will be transformed into Treasure Island’s famous vessel, the Hispaniola, where Long John Silver and Jim Hawkins will judge the best fancy dress costume. The winner will have their picture taken at Blists Hill’s own photographic studio.
Other fun activities include a Treasure Trail around the town with clues leading to buried treasure; everyone taking part will receive a lollipop. Prizes will also be up for grabs if you can correctly guess where the treasure is located on a two-metre map of Blists Hill Victorian Town.
