Campervan charm with Laura Mugridge

By Caroline King - July 2, 2011Posted in : Comedy, Review, Theatre

Laura Mugridge, Running on Air - Camden People’s Theatre When: 1st July 2011

Where: in a campervan, a short walk from Camden People’s Theatre, London

£: 12

What is it?

Laura Mugridge’s show Running on Air about her adventures in a campervan is an adventure in itself.  After turning up at Camden People’s Theatre (just around the corner from Euston station) we are guided to Laura’s campervan parked nearby.  We are given a short introduction to Joni the bright van and are ushered into the compact space inside.

The van is cosy and charming and suits Laura’s style of comedy theatre very well.  The journey begins with the story of Laura and her husband Tom’s journey down from Edinburgh in 2009.  It’s an unhappy journey in which the campervan not only provides the story but the interior also becomes part of the set.  With the use of blinds, domestic items, music and projectors we are treated to and involved in the story telling.  With interactive tales of Cornwall and the Lake District and a bit of improvised karaoke the whole show is really quite funny, intimate and touching.  Laura has a great way of keeping the audience involved by asking you questions and referring to you by name, something that is only possible thanks to the quirky venue allowing only just five people in per show.
