Nothing more than two women and a chair for minimalist theatre

By Caroline King - May 21, 2011Posted in : Theatre

When: 25th May 2011, 7.30pm

Where: The Old Joint Stock, 4 Temple Row West, Birmingham, B2 5NY

£: 8 (concessions 6)

What is it?

The premise of this show is several short pieces using only two women and a chair.  Examining the relationships between women and between people, everything is stripped back using minimal costume, set and props so that the focus is always on the characters and their relationships.

The main piece is a play by Michael Olsen called Two Women and a Chair. The play’s two characters Jessie and Martine arrive at an audition to discover only a bare room with a mysterious black chair.  The only instructions on what they should do are contained on the flyer advertising the play, and it soon becomes clear that this is no ordinary audition, or is it an audition at all?  The answers, as always, lie in the choices Jessie and Martine are about to make.

The Old Joint Stock is a pub and theatre housed in a grade two listed building with a beautiful Victorian pub interior.  It is one of Fuller’s outlets serving real ale and pies.  The theatre is located on the second floor and has just 80 seats, making it small but perfectly formed.
