Play with a good sense of humour would like to meet like-minded theatre-goer

By Caroline King - November 10, 2010Posted in : Review, Theatre

Personals, Bridewell Theatre When: 9th – 13th November 2010 at 7.30pm (Sat Mat 2.30pm)

Where: Bridewell Theatre, Bride Lane, London EC4Y 8EQ

£: 12 (concessions 10)

What is it?

Personals is a musical comedy from the creators of sit-com Friends and presented by the Maple Giant Theatre company.  A cast of six play various characters searching for relationships.  The characters range from the desperate and the lonely to the nerdy and the kinky.  The Bridewell Theatre is a small space for a musical but they manage to squeeze in a band and use a minimalistic set to pull off a decent show.

Personals is a sketch style play with different characters each searching for love with the help of the internet, dating videos and instructional tapes.  Some methods prove more successful than others, but even those who place an ad in jest get more than they bargained for.  Who knew a dwarf could be so good for a relationship?  There are some great moments, like when one guy moves in with his girlfriend and his baggage turns out to be more than just a few bits of crockery.

I’m not a big fan of musicals but for those that are this is a great little production with more reasonable ticket prices than those of the West End and equally good performances.
