A jewel of a theatre double bill

By Caroline King - October 13, 2010Posted in : Theatre

Precious Jewel and Almost Human, Old Joint Stock Theatre When: 22nd – 23rd October 2010

Where: Old Joint Stock Theatre, Birmingham

£: 12 (concessions 10)

What is it?

Almost Human and Precious Jewel are two new plays by Lichfield writer and author Phil Preece.  Almost Human (or how Rob Smallman saved the planet!) is a comedy where a young man stuck at home, playing endlessly on his computer, leaves a program slowly working and evolving away in the background.  Unknown to him is the simple fact that a new ‘superior’ being has been created and she is hungry for world domination!  How does Rob stop her?  The hilarious events unfold with a twist in the tale.

In Precious Jewel a royal hunting party seek shelter in a Staffordshire house on a storm filled night in 1585.  The turmoil of the storm outside is nothing compared to that within, which must, in some way, be calmed before the break of day.  Highly atmospheric and emotional, Precious Jewel will leave audiences asking ‘what if?’.

In these two plays the future and past collide.  Directed by Paolo Allen and featuring Lichfield actress Della Allen as ‘Queen Elizabeth 1st’, Natasha James, Jim Kelly, Mark Blake and Matthew Huntbach as ‘Tyrell’ the plays take two very different looks at the abuse of power and position.
